Filipino-Canadian Legal Trailblazers and Pathways to Careers in Law

Workshop description: This workshop will introduce participants to Filipino-Canadian legal professionals at various career stages and in different aspects of practice. The facilitators will discuss their experiences in carving a path for future Filipino-Canadian leaders to follow.

Paul Jonathan Saguil: Paul Jonathan Saguil is Deputy Head of TD Bank Group’s Sanctions Compliance and Anti-Bribery / Anti-Corruption Program as part of the Global Anti-Money Laundering Department. He previously practiced as Senior Counsel in TD’s Legal Department and at Stockwoods LLP. He has appeared before all levels of courts in Ontario, the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court, and various regulatory bodies. He received his Hons. B.A. (Philosophy) from York University in 2004 and LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2007. Before being called to the Bar of Ontario in 2008, he served as a judicial clerk to the Honourable Justice Phelan of the Federal Court. He is a member of the Board for the Ontario Justice Education Network and the 519 Community Centre; past Chair of the Law Society of Ontario Equity Advisory Group and of the Board of Directors for Start Proud; and served on the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee for the GTA.

Jeffrey Hernaez: Jeff Hernaez is a commercial litigation lawyer in Lawson Lundell LLP’s Vancouver office. Originally from Ontario, Jess completed his J.D. at Osgoode Hall Law School and his BA (Hons.) at Western University. Jeff has been involved in Politics in various volunteer capacities federally, as well as in British Columbia and Ontario. 

Nikki Pangilinan: Nikki Pangilinan is currently in her second year at Osgoode Hall Law School. Prior to law school, she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Ethics, Society, and Law with a double minor in Psychology and Writing and Rhetoric at the University of Toronto. She is a first generation Filipino immigrant and considers herself to be a “third culture kid” because of how frequently she’s moved back and forth from Manila to Toronto. She is passionate about enriching the talents of the Filipino Canadian community and would love to see more Filipinos in law. 

Joseph Guiyab: Joe was born in Manila, Philippines, and moved to Canada at the age of 2. He was educated at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law and is called to the Ontario Bar. Joe articled at McCarthy Tétrault and now works for RBC Capital Markets in regulatory strategy. He also teaches law and business strategy and the University of Toronto. Joe also has extensive political experience working as an aide to a former provincial minister and in countless campaigns.  He is an avid tennis and basketball fan, being a Raptors Season Ticketholder since 2014.

Justice Steve Coroza: Justice Steve Coroza was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario in April 2020. Before being  appointed to the Court he served as a judge with the Ontario Court of Justice (St. Catharines)  from 2009 to 2013 and with the Superior Court of Justice (Brampton) from 2013 to 2020. Prior to his appointments, Justice Coroza received an LL.B. from the University of Windsor and  was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1997. He also received an LL.M. from Osgoode Hall Law  School in 2003. He was an adjunct professor of trial advocacy at Osgoode Hall Law School from 2010-2015. In  addition to his role as an adjunct instructor with the Trial Advocacy Seminar, Justice Coroza is an  instructor with the Intensive Trial Advocacy Workshop (Osgoode Professional Development  Program) and a guest instructor with the University of Notre Dame Trial Advocacy Program and  the Advocates Society.
